Leadership in Flight Training (LIFT) Academy is expanding its training fleet by nearly five dozen Diamond aircraft, according to the manufacturer.

The partnership expansion announced Thursday will add 50 DA40s and six DA42s to the Republic Airways training program.

According to Diamond Aircraft, the trainers are slated to bolster programs at new LIFT Academy campuses in Galveston, Texas; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and at Tuskegee University in Alabama.

“These aircraft are chosen for their advanced technology and fuel efficiency, which not only align with our sustainability efforts but also closely mirror the aircraft our pilots will operate at Republic Airways,” said Ed Bagden, director of flight operations and academic programs at LIFT Academy. “This strategic expansion ensures that LIFT Academy continues to offer industry-leading training, preparing our students with a seamless transition to their careers as airline pilots.”

The Diamond DA40 piston single is powered by a 180 hp Lycoming IO-360 engine and comes equipped with Garmin G1000 NXi avionics. The aircraft offers a top cruise speed of 152 knots, 934 nm range, and maximum useful load of 900 pounds. The DA42 advanced piston twin is powered by 168 hp Austro Engine AE300 powerplants. It offers a top cruise speed of nearly 200 knots, 1,225 nm range, and maximum useful load of 1,276 pounds.

If you are looking for a way to balance flight training with the pursuit of a college degree, check out the partnership between Purdue Global, Purdue University’s online arm and Indianapolis-based Leadership in Flight Training (LIFT) Academy.

LIFT Academy is a U.S.-based commercial aviation pilot training school owned by Republic Airways. LIFT Academy utilizes a fleet of Diamond Aircraft, including the DA40 and DA20 single-engine and DA42 twin-engine aircraft, along with aviation advanced training devices (AATDs) from Diamond Simulation and Frasca International to prepare applicants for careers in commercial aviation.

Purdue Global is the West Lafayette, Indiana, university’s online arm created for working adults who have life experience and often some college credits and need the flexibility of e-learning to achieve a college degree.

Under the partnership, students who complete all five flight certifications/ratings (private pilot, commercial pilot, certificated flight instructor, and instrument and multiengine ratings) will receive 45 college credits from Purdue Global toward their bachelor’s degree in professional flight. This is equivalent to one year of college credits.

Students who have previous college credits from other schools may receive additional transfer credits, thereby saving money and allowing them to graduate faster.

LIFT Academy students, along with Republic Airways employees and immediate family members, are eligible for a tuition incentive package for undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates.

“The need for more commercial and regional pilots is great right now,” said Sara Sander, Purdue Global vice president and dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and interim dean of the School of Aviation. “By working together with LIFT Academy, we hope to address this workforce and economic development issue.”

Purdue Global’s professional flight degree program is a collaboration between it and Purdue University’s School of Aviation and Transportation Technology. Purdue boasts one of the oldest aviation programs in the nation, tracing its roots to 1910 with the creation of an aero club on campus. The aviation interest continued to grow over the decades and included adding aviatrix Amelia Earhart as a visiting faculty member between 1935 and 1937.

According to Scott Hornback, LIFT Academy CEO, the partnership “makes state-of-the-art flight training accessible and affordable. Students train with cutting-edge technology for an in-demand career as a commercial airline pilot beginning day one.”

FAA Launches Investigation of Runway Event at Washington National Airport https://www.flyingmag.com/faa-launches-investigation-of-runway-event-at-washington-national-airport/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 15:57:16 +0000 https://www.flyingmag.com/?p=168347 During the runway incursion, an airliner crossed an active runway at KDCA without a clearance.

The FAA is investigating a runway incursion at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) on the morning of March 7.

The event marks the seventh runway near miss at a U.S. airport this year.

“Republic Airways Flight 4736 crossed Runway 1 without clearance, putting the aircraft in the path of United Airlines Flight 2003, which had just been cleared for takeoff, the agency told FLYING in a statement.

The Republic flight was conducted on an Embraer E175. The United flight was operating an Airbus A319.

An air traffic controller noticed the situation and immediately canceled the takeoff clearance for the United flight, according to the FAA. The pilot of the Airbus complied.

“The pilot of the Republic flight had originally been cleared to cross Runway 4 but turned on the wrong taxiway,” the FAA said.

The FAA will determine the closest proximity between the two aircraft as part of the investigation.

A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board told FLYING that the agency is “monitoring the situation,” but as of Wednesday morning had not launched an investigation.

Runway, Taxiway Confusion

A review of the airport diagram for KDCA shows several intersecting runways and “hot spots,” the FAA’s term for places on the airport surface where the potential for a runway incursion is high. Often this is because of complicated or confusing taxiway layouts and runway intersections.

Last spring the FAA made an effort to standardize hot spot symbols on airport diagrams by employing the use of three shapes with two distinct meanings: a circle or ellipse for ground movement hot spots and a cylinder for wrong surface hot spots.

The FAA adds these hot spot indicators on diagrams to call a pilot’s attention to the potential for:

  • hold short line infractions
  • approach hold issues
  • complex taxiway configurations
  • movement-nonmovement boundary area issues
  • tower line of sight problems
  • marking and signage issues.

The cylinder for wrong surface hot spots depicts locations where an aircraft has inadvertently attempted to take off or has landed on the wrong surface.

Following in the footsteps of several air taxi competitors, Brazil’s Embraer (NYSE: ERJ) announced Monday it has successfully used a special purpose acquisition corporation (SPAC) merger to spin off its Eve Urban Air Mobility (UAM) electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) company.

Zanite Acquisition Corp. shareholders approved the merger Friday. Common stock for the newly named Eve Holdings Inc. will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday under the symbol EVEX. The company’s public warrants will be traded as EVEXW.

It’s the latest development in a global industry aimed at designing, testing, and manufacturing small, zero-emission aircraft to ferry passengers on short flights across gridlocked urban areas.

“The funding raised through the transaction provides Eve with growth capital and positions Eve well to execute its development plans, aided by our ongoing strategic partnership with Embraer,” said a statement released Monday by Eve’s co-CEO Andre Stein. “We intend to further strengthen our position as a leading global UAM player by delivering an effective and sustainable new mode of urban transportation.”

Eve has previously said it has already secured launch orders from 17 customers, via non-binding letters of intent. Those deals could result in a pipeline of 1,735 eVTOL aircraft valued at about $5 billion, according to Eve.

Merger Details

The total amount of private investment in public equity (PIPE) closed Friday with the new company priced at $10 per share, totaling $357 million, $52 million more than expected. The PIPE included $185 million from Embraer, $25 million from Zanite’s sponsor and $147 million from a consortium of investors including:

The merger has been in the works for months—the latest eVTOL developer to take advantage of a SPAC’s ability to raise investment funds more quickly than a traditional IPO.

Four competing air taxi developers—Germany’s Lilium (NASDAQ: LILM), Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR), and U.K.-based Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL)—also executed SPAC mergers in 2021. Another major German eVTOL developer, Volocopter, canceled plans for a SPAC merger last December.

About the Aircraft

Last month, Thales and Eve announced a partnership to develop avionics, flight control, navigation, communication, and connectivity systems for Eve’s proposed new aircraft.

New innovation on Eve’s eVTOL is expected to include a man-machine interface designed from scratch, Eve CTO Luiz Valentini said last December. “This new interface is designed to simplify piloting tasks, increase safety and reduce the training of pilots when compared to helicopters.”

Eve’s air taxi design includes seating for a pilot and four passengers. Lifted by eight rotors and driven by two rear-mounted pusher propellers, the aircraft is expected to offer a range of 100 km (60 sm).

Digital simulator flights of the aircraft began in 2020. Commercial introduction is planned for 2026.
